The Government is set to begin crisis talks with energy sector bosses today, after the price cap wasMinisters are working on a fresh package of measures for the next Prime Minister to consider when they take office, according to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, ashas laid out the main options available to Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, assessing the likelihood of each occurring with a score from 1 – not likely, to 5 – very likely, with the help of GoCompare.
Richard Lane, director of external affairs at the debt charity StepChange, said: “We’re calling for further targeted support from Government that matches the scale of the new price cap rise, alongside bringing the uprating of benefits forward to September to help those on low incomes cope with the rise in inflation.”
“In the medium term, the option of a social tariff to help people on low incomes struggling to afford their energy bills should be explored.
