Ian Bretherton would be in the stands cheering on Southport and Ainsdale Amateurs Sunday 1st team no matter the weather
An amateur football team will honour their 'number one fan' following his death after a short illness.
Ian began following the local football team when one of the players, Lee Ashun, mentioned that his neighbour wanted to come and watch a match. Then team then found their biggest fan from that moment on.Manager Gareth Jones, who founded the team in 2001, spoke to the ECHO about Ian's unwavering dedication to the team over the past 22 years.
The team had undergone a name change from being called Inter Global from 2002 to 2012, to now Southport and Ainsdale Amateurs Sunday 1st team. Ian had seen all of the team's achievements over the years, including their Lancashire Sunday Trophy win in 2017. He continued: “Actually, I would probably say more so. I'm just glad that over the 22 years, we've been able to give him some great sides to watch and unbelievable memories.”
