Around 10,000 British holidaymakers were left stranded
Raging wildfires in Rhodes, Greece, have seen around 10,000 British holidaymakers stranded on the destination island, as hotels burn down. Many are now staying in emergency accommodation in the likes of schools and sports halls, but with thousands more having booked a Greek getaway in the coming days, many are wondering if their holiday is still on.
It comes as Greece continues to face extreme temperatures. Thousands of British holidaymakers have been evacuated from the island of Rhodes after wildfires torched the island. On Sunday morning the British Embassy in Athens told holidaymakers to 'evacuate now'. In a tweet, it said: "If you are in Kiotari or Gennadi areas, evacuate now to Plymiri." It was reported some 19,000 people had been evacuated at the time, with many still on the holiday island as they waited for help and advice.
The Government department says: "Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece and there are a number of active wildfires. If you are a British national affected by wildfires, please follow the guidance from the emergency services. Call the Greek Emergency Services on 112 if you are in immediate danger.
