Travelmakers are being warned to stay vigilant if they plan to visit Italy soon
Government officials have updated its travel advice for Italy and the Vatican City. The update comes over concerns surrounding political demonstrations.
The Italian authorities have increased their security around "some Jewish community sites", the Foreign Office said. Holidaymakers from Britain have been advised to "stay away" from demonstrations and "stay aware" of their surroundings. The government department states: "Italian authorities have increased security around some Jewish community sites due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities."As Manchester Evening News reports, the travel update comes days after hundreds of people reportedly gathered in the centre of Rome to protest against Israeli attacks on Palestinian territories.
The Foreign Office also highlights that "no travel can be guaranteed safe" and urges anyone travelling to stay up to date on the latest advice. The warning was issued just days ahead of the October half term which will likely see an increase of holidaymakers travelling to foreign countries such as Italy.
Last year over four million Brits alone went on holiday to Italy. Also this week, Jet2 airline issued advice for people travelling to Italy today due to industrial action with disruption expected to trains, flights and local transport services. It said flights are scheduled to go ahead as planned but it would keep customers informed of any chances.
