But, right now, there are city-centre boozers across the country where, even on a Friday night, it feels like you’re basically having a pint in a kennels. You literally have to negotiate straining leads and tails to get around the place. Last week – and I kid you not – I witnessed a dog sat in a seat drinking from its bowl, which the owners had put on the table. I half expected them to open a bag of crisps and lay it out for them all to share.
It’s not just pubs, I’ve noticed. Attractions designed for children are increasingly selling themselves asI was at a mini-railway the other day, specifically aimed at toddlers. I watched as an English bull terrier – all muscle and teeth – strained at its lead at any passing child. I wondered why such a place would effectively contract out the safety of its youngest visitors to any random person who wanted to bring an animal bigger than the average three-year-old.
