reported that the book describes how Harry was spurred on in his infamous decision to wear a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party in 2005 by his brother William and sister-in-law Kate. “They both howled,” he recalls. Elsewhere in the book, Harry even reportedly describes Prince William as his “beloved brother and arch nemesis”.
The signs were perhaps always there that the younger Prince might one day break ranks from what was expected and say the unsayable. In his 2009 interview alongside William, there was a bitterly-delivered dig at the media over not keeping their “mouths shut” about his service in Afghanistan. And, with hindsight, perhaps the jibes of one-upmanship that came thick and fast between the brothers pointed to something beyond banter.
William’s approach to his younger brother’s indiscretion has been to say almost nothing publicly. And everything points to communication behind the scenes now having also frozen. Both Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace have been quick to declare that they are not commenting. This has long been their preferred stance – “never complain, never explain” – and so far it has served them pretty well.
