The forgotten town held to ransom by teen 'gangs' where mums fear to let their kids out at night

The place once dubbed ‘the forgotten town’ of Lancashire was hoping for a revival of its fortunes at the start of the year.

The weekend’s antics prompted the cinema’s owner, Sam Lavington, to blast the constant stream of disorder and threaten to close the facility down if he did not receive more support from police or security at the Concourse Shopping Centre. “We feel very vulnerable, when they come in en masse - it’s very frightening to be at work at night, and we’re not doing much business. It’s very good in the day but at night, people won’t come out because they’re frightened of the kids.

The bulk of the town today was created in the 1960s, largely as a residential overspill for the rapidly growing population of Liverpool, but lost the train station in the sixties and many large industrial employers in the 1970s. Among its quirks is that it has many roundabouts but no traffic lights. Owner and florist Hayley Thomas told us: “There are just too many of them and it happens on a Friday night. I haven’t witnessed anything personally but it’s not nice for customers.” Her feelings are echoed by staff at Womble Inn, barbecued chicken specialists around the corner.

“I know there’s nothing for them to do. But there’s always gangs all the way down, everywhere. I have got a granddaughter - I wouldn’t let her out as you’ve got to watch them now. It’s a shame but that’s the way it is.” "The fed-up owner has also angered thousands of residents as because of this disorder he has announced he intends to close the cinema in January. I am sure you will agree with me that this is completely intolerable.

"I'm thankful for the correspondence from Cllr Furey and his acceptance that anti-social behaviour isn't an issue that can be solved by policing alone. We must work together to address what are often complex issues and I give my full support to West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership who play a key role, working closely with Lancashire Constabulary and other local stakeholders, as part of our problem solving approach to ASB.
