Conservative MPs are now counting Liz Truss’s survival by the hour rather than days or even weeks, such is the perilous state in which the Prime Minister finds herself.
Just weeks after she swept to victory in the Tory leadership race, Ms Truss is now witnessing her authority drip away with every MP’s public pronouncement calling for her to go. But given the party’s rules ensure the Conservative leader cannot face a confidence vote in their first 12 months in power, there are only so many options for mutinous backbenchers to force the Prime Minister out.Most Tories believe the likeliest outcome will be that chair of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers Sir Graham Brady, accompanied by a phalanx of senior Conservatives, will come knocking on the Prime Minister’s door to tell her the game is up.
