A study published in BMCMedicine reports elevated levels of frailty across three common mental disorders. The authors state that screening for frailty might help identify individuals with mental disorders who are at risk of premature mortality.

The results of the analyses of the frailty phenotype and all-cause mortality stratified by sex are presented in Additional file: Fig. S11 and Table S9. Overall, males presented with modestly greater all-cause mortality hazards relative to females. Compared to the non-frail group without mental disorders, pre-frail females with depression had a higher risk of all-cause mortality .

The results for the subset of participants from which we excluded individuals with comorbid depression and anxiety disorders . Notably, these sensitivity analyses showed that individuals with depression and no comorbid anxiety disorder had an increased all-cause mortality hazard relative to individuals without mental disorders at both the pre-frailty and frailty level.

The above differences in frailty levels translated into an increased risk of all-cause mortality among individuals with a lifetime history of depression or bipolar disorders with respect to both the frailty phenotype and the frailty index measures.
