If you’re tempted by a free trial this Christmas, make sure you don’t get caught out
New research suggests that a staggering 17million people across the UK are hit by additional fees once their free trials come to an end, putting even more pressure on household finances during the ongoing cost of living crisis.
This rises to almost half of young people aged 18-34 with three in 10 of this age group saying they are planning to borrow money to get by over the festive season. Almost two-thirds of people said there should be a ban on free trials where you get automatically enrolled into a paid subscription while three in 10 felt there was a lack of transparency around subscriptions and regular payments. This perceived lack of transparency suggests that greater protection is needed to help people from automatically falling into contracts they may not be able to afford.
The research also indicates the challenges people face when they try to cancel subscriptions and regular payments. Over a quarter of people avoided cancelling or switching providers due to hidden costs while similar proportions avoided it because the process would take too long or was too complicated .
