We could be in for another cold spell
A jet stream of heavy rain and gales are set to hit Britain after icy storms hammered the USA. The Met Office has shared footage of the jet stream path - carrying the cold air across the Atlantic ocean - predicting it could lead to "unsettled conditions" over the New Year Weekend.
Heavy showers and cloudy skies are predicted for the area on December 30-31. Light rain is expected on the first day of the New Year.In a weather tweet, Met Office said: "This is partly related to the cold air that has been spreading across North America, helping to strengthen the jet stream and push low-pressure systems across the Atlantic."
Those living in Buffalo have resorted to risking their lives as they search for cars buried in the snow. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “This is a war with mother nature, and she has been hitting us with everything she has. It is like going to a war zone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking.”
With surfaces falling below freezing after dusk, patchy ice is likely to develop on untreated surfaces with the potential for some wash-off of previously treated surfaces where showers fall. Meanwhile, in South East England and Wales, Wednesday will bring a band of rain moving northeastwards, with downpours becoming heavy and persistent.
