Depending on the cut of your shorts, you can feel like Stephanie Seymour or Axl Rose . When they’re higher in the waist, I like to pretend that I’m channelling a ’70s Farrah Fawcett. Despite owning about 10 pairs of jean shorts, I tend to stick to the same trusty pair I picked up in a Brixton charity shop for £5, just as many years ago.
My denim obsession doesn’t end there; my denim shirts appear to be breeding in the bottom of my wardrobe, and my newfound appetite for all things dungaree is becoming a worry. And I am not alone. Denim, that most practical and versatile of materials, holds us all in its thrall and has done for decades. There’s something about denim that is just so right.
Jeans have always had the tendency to unite a generation in a single cut. I was born in the first half of the ’80s. By the time I was 10, the grunge aesthetic was in full effect – potent enough, even, to infiltrate the tiny village in Hampshire in which I grew up. My sister is eight years older than me and she worewhich obviously meant they were the only acceptable style of jeans.
