'He started his theatre work with the Oxford University Dramatic Society but was regarded as a lightweight as he recalls that he found difficulty in keeping a straight face in straight plays.'
Richard Curtis is 26-years-old and a very merry soul. He came down from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1979, having gained a first class degree in English, and has since made his name as a writer and revue artist in collaboration with Rowan Atkinson and the Not the Nine O’Clock News team. At university, he started his theatre work with the Oxford University Dramatic Society but was regarded as a lightweight as he recalls that he found difficulty in keeping a straight face in straight plays.
He has written two two-hour plays on the theme of Don Quixote, which took four months of unbroken effort and come into the category of Great Early Works. The plays have enjoyed a far-flung success with the Actors’ Touring Company of London in Jerusalem, South America, Greece, the Hebrides and Ireland.
Despite his considerable financial luck, he lives in an unchanged student atmosphere with three friends in a London house. He reads his putatively humorous material to the inmates, testing reactions. “If it requires them to be in the right mood, it is no good,” he says. “You have got to interrupt in the middle of a severe financial crisis when the milk is boiling over and say, ‘Is this funny?’ Then I leave it for a day.”
