Black spot is the 'most serious' infection for roses that can strike all plants
Gardening is hard work and nothing can be be more heartbreaking than when your spot of paradise gets stricken with disease.
Black spot can attack any plant, showing up on leaves at first as a tiny black dot and growing bigger before causing the leaf to turn yellow and die. If left untreated, the gardening experts at Homebase say black spot can spread quickly and weaken plants severely. The symptoms of black spot are small, round black patches that range from one millimetre to one centimetre on the upper side of the spots. The leaf will turn yellow around the spots and patches and will eventually fall prematurely.
The debris and the diseased leaves cannot be put in the compost heap as this will spread the disease. This task needs to be repeated throughout the year whenever black spot appears.
