GCSE appeals jumped 41% last year, and schools expect a further rise as grading gets much tougher
, with 25.6 per cent of pupils in the region missing more than 10 per cent of classes this year – above the national average of 22.3 per cent.
“It hasn’t been a big issue apart from our Year 11s, which have less than 90 per cent attendance. When you’ve got over 10 per cent of the year group struggling to get into school you know that the performance of the year group will be hit.” Chris McGovern, the chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, predicted that “pushy parents” and private schools keen to top the rankings would press the hardest for appeals.
AQA, one of the main exam boards for GCSE qualifications, charges £120 for its preliminary appeals stage and £205 for a subsequent appeal hearing.
