Social split on tutor access creating a 'shameful, increasing disparity' between advantaged and disadvantaged pupils, heads warn
Latest Ipsos Mori figures for the Sutton Trust show that nearly a third of state secondary school students surveyed in England and Wales last year said they had benefited from private tuition at some point, up from 18 per cent in 2005.
“But at the upper end, we’ve actually seen an increase. So I think probably sadly from our point of view, that’s reflecting a bit of a wide gap.” By April this year, around a third of the £594m earmarked to fund tutors through the programme had gone unspent. The National Foundation For Educational Research toldthat while there has been an uptick in demand this year, it is “probably not high enough to make a dent in the gap”.: “You’ve got some communities, particularly the home counties, where because there has been a culture of tutoring it has been quite easy for people to be able to identify and get in touch with tutors.
