Fans of German football club Mainz 05 have called for the side to cancel its upcoming pre-season friendly with Newcastle United over the Magpies’ Saudi Arabian ownership.
Fans of German football club Mainz 05 have called for the side to cancel its upcomingScheduled for Monday 18 July, the match forms part of a pre-season training camp on Germany organised by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, which is also due to include a game against 1860 Munich three days earlier.
Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund purchased an 80 percent stake in Newcastle last autumn from previous owner Mike Ashley, in a controversial takeover which forms part of the Gulf nation’s plan to ‘sportswash’ its international image. Sportswashing is a widely used term which describes a nation with a poor international image trying to launder its reputation by associating itself with successful sporting institutions and cultural touchstones.
The takeover has drawn widespread criticism from human rights groups, with Saudi Arabia among the worst performing countries in the world on issues including freedom of the press, LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, and the death penalty.
