Adam Wainwright earned his 200th career victory Monday. Cole, who has 143, could be next to gain entry to the increasingly exclusive club.
. His record is 13-4 but should be gaudier; in 10 of his starts, Cole has worked at least six innings and allowed no more than two earned runs but not collected the victory.
Gerrit Cole, talking with Yankees manager Aaron Boone, has a chance to reach 200 innings for the sixth time in his career. “I just think as an industry, we just don’t put enough value on it,” Cole said. “You don’t get penalized in some of the statistics for not playing. And if you play at less than 100 percent and have average to below-average performance, you get penalized, from a statistical standpoint, for showing up on the field.
“I do think the industry recognizes it in free agency; that’s probably the marketplace that really gives you the most credit,” he said. “But it’s not like you’re getting a substantial raise going through arbitration throwing 170 innings versus 200 innings — and that’s an entire month worth of pitching.”
It’s a widespread lament for pitchers of Cole’s generation and older: the systemic diminishing of the starting pitcher. In 2005, when Wainwright made his debut, 93 pitchers worked the minimum 162 innings to qualify for the ERA title. Last season, that number had fallen by more than half, to 45.
