Cllr Angus Millar, SNP, said there has been a 'sharp' bounce back after the covid pandemic and a report concluded 'continued interventions' are needed.
Harmful air pollution in Glasgow's city centre has reached “concerning levels", the council's climate convener has warned.
The annual mean objective for nitrogen dioxide was exceeded at four locations, including Gordon Street and Hope Street, the report added. “While Glasgow has made significant progress on improving air quality in recent years, the latest figures clearly demonstrate a sharp and unwelcome bounce back from the pandemic with nitrogen dioxide levels up by an average of a fifth.
The main source of air pollution comes from road traffic, the report stated. Airborne particulate matter is more heavily influenced by non-local effects, but nitrogen dioxide is more directly attributable to local traffic volumes and engine type, particularly diesel engines, it added. “However, monitoring within the city centre conducted by diffusion tubes show a significant increase on 2021 figures,” they added. “The number of locations showing exceedances of the annual mean NO2 objective has increased year on year from the pandemic-affected low of 2020.”
