Glasgow City Council has settled only a few hundred compensation claims for injuries and damage caused by potholes in the last three years.
In Glasgow, close to 4,800 claims were submitted but just 240 received any money. The figures come after it was revealed that the local authority received 7,000 reports of potholes over January and February in this year alone, reports the Sunday Daily Express.Neil Greig, director of policy and research at IAM RoadSmart, said it was obvious there was not enough cash to sort out the issue with Scotland’s roads.
An analysis of the data from all but one of the councils show that just over 2,000 claims were settled across Scotland between 2020 and 2023 totalling to an estimated £886,000. However, some 86 per cent of the claims were rejected meaning in the region of £5million may have been held in compensation.Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox.
