Mid-tier miners of the red metal light on ground in Australia
There are no significant independent copper companies operating in Australia listed on the ASX since BHP's takeover of OZ Minerals last year. Sandfire offers ASX investors tangible copper exposure, but its operations are in Botswana and Spain. New York-listed Metals Acquisition owns the former Glencore-owned CSA mine in Cobar and has routinely been speculated as being interested in Glencore's Mt Isa copper assets.
And it is interesting that Glencore was today saying the smelter will continue operating post the closure of the copper mine/concentrator. Interesting, because the latter is a substantial contributor of feed to the smelter. Where's other smelter feed going to come from post-2025? Still, there are arguably two obvious factors - one current, one perennial - conspiring against a deal with Metals Acquisition or any other third party.
