Various opinions came at a Pendle Council meeting which discussed action to cut fossil fuel emissions

‘Golden opportunities’ to save energy and cut long-term fuel costs in households, leisure centres, council buildings and transport operations are being missed by Pendle Council, it has been claimed.

However, other councillors said overall progress is being made on emissions and new arrangements. They also said the council needs a centrally-agreed plan on electric vehicle charging points, rather than individual towns or villages acting alone.

“There have been some golden opportunities which have been completely missed by Pendle Council. Last autumn, there was a proposal to replace Pendle Leisure Trust equipment with new technology. But it was kicked-out and funds were not made available to do that.” Replying to David Whipp at this week’s Policy & Resources meeting, Conservative Coun Mike Goulthorp, who is also Deputy Leader of Pendle Council, said: “There are areas where improvements have been made.”

Financial officer Richard Gibson said the council was involved in a lot of projects and considerations. De-carbonisation schemes offered grants but did not automatically cover all costs of improvement works, he said. The council had to think widely and consider all its estate and activities. Although emission reductions from Pendle Council’s owned transport fleet did not quite meet its five per cent reduction target, this performance is likely to improve . A pilot scheme using hydro vegetable oil and gas to liquid fuels for council vehicles began this April.
