AI is being used to detect fare dodgers in subway stations
Seven subway stations have reportedly installed the technology already as of May, and authorities hope to expand it to more than two dozen more stations by the end year,It's not quite clear how the technology works. MTA spokesperson Joana Flores said it's being used to monitor the rate at which people are evading fares rather than trying to take direct legal action against them.
The software was created by a Spanish company, Awaait, that has built a system capable of tracking people on public transport, and sending photos of people it believes evaded paying fares to local transportation agents.
