Parker is one of just a handful of top-level Black female executives in the tech space. In contrast to some of her peers, she sees diversity as a “superpower”, and fights valiantly to protect it.

A lack of regulation has transformed spaces once revered as utopias for the exchange of ideas into hotbeds of misinformation and incendiary language. Recently, reports emerged of Meta’sto block Facebook ads containing extreme hate speech, and several big names, including Shonda Rhimes, Toni Braxton and Whoopi Goldberg, chose to deactivate their Twitter accounts citing increased abuse and harassment.

When we sat down at the YouTube Black Gala, Melonie was the picture of corporate success, wearing classicpearls with a vibrant orange dress and immaculately braided hair. Breaking into corporate America as a Black woman in the ’90s, she initially tried to shrink herself to fit in, following the advice of her parents and mentors who experienced racism in the workplace before her. “I muted parts of myself, left them at the proverbial door and then picked them back up on the way out,” she recalls.

Melonie has become well acquainted with inclusivity as a force for driving business value over the course of her 27-year career, too. Google’s platforms are dependent on the ever-evolving “creator economy” – said to be worth. Empowering marginalised creators, then, is far more than just a passion project – rather, it’s a bonafide business strategy, and, Melonie believes, essential to the survival of social media.

Tellingly, under Melonie’s direction, the YouTube Black Gala was an event filled with the sort of details that only come with a deep appreciation for culture and devotion to inclusion. The menu boasted Caribbean delicacies like curried goat, with the dinner followed by a performance from R&B singerand an after-party where an enthusiastic crowd danced the night away to Afrobeats and Bashment remixes.
