Starting in December, Google will begin deleting millions of inactive Gmail accounts from its servers as the company warns these unused accounts can be hijacked by hackers for malicious use.

Users who maintain an active subscription for services like news publications or apps through their Gmail account will also not face deletion.

This could include: Logging on, sending an email, watching a YouTube video, using Google Search, or accessing Google Drive.Accounts that have YouTube videos uploaded are permanently considered active and will not be deleted. This is because old accounts often rely on out-of-date or re-used passwords and are 10 times less likely to have two-factor authentication set up, according to an internal analysis by Google.

Users are also able to download and export their account data to other platforms through the Takeout feature which can create a full backup of the account. Director of Security, Trust and Privacy at Google Cloud, Suzanne Frey shared a blog post in which she admitted it was common for third-party developers to read the contents of users' Gmail messages if they had been granted the permissions to do so – one of the primary allegations of the investigation.
