“Gordon’s no fool” How Gordon Brown became the most vocal member of the ex-PMs club as he returns to the heart of Labour policy 🔴Exclusive HugoGye, paulwaugh & singharj
After leaving the UK’s highest office, every former prime minister must decide just how active they want to be in politics.
At a meeting of the shadow Cabinet this year, Mr Brown remarked that it had been “a long time” since he had such a meeting – 25 years earlier, when New Labour were on the eve of winning power in 1997. “I hope the next time I address you, it is as the Cabinet,” he added. Sir Tony Blair also speaks regularly to the current leader, but he chooses to keep most of his engagement behind closed doors rather than going public with his ideas. “Gordon is just so active,” a Labour source said.
Some in the party remain highly sceptical that Mr Brown’s priorities, such as abolishing the House of Lords and ramping up regional devolution, are the right ones for a post-2024 Labour government. “Talking about Lords reform may go down well in Edinburgh dinner parties and Islington dinner parties,” a source said. “It’s not where our focus should be right now.”
