Lancaster is undoubtedly one of the UK’s best looking cities, full of history and scenery that is synonymous with the red rose county.
This week’s suggested walk takes us to the heart of the historic city, passing by its castle and priory and including a stop at its oldest pub. The route includes stretches along the canal and river and through multiple parks, goes past cricket pitches and Lancaster City’s football stadium and is handily located near the train station. For those accessing the city by public transport, feel free to join at step three and enjoy an exploration around the castle grounds at the endpoint instead.
The circular route starts and ends at the Three Mariners pub, a 15th century Grade II-listed building which has operated as a pub since the 17th century. The pub’s remarkable history includes housing Jacobite soldiers along with prisoners awaiting trial in its cellar, including during the infamous Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. It is also thought to have one of only two 'gravity-fed' cellars left in the country.
The route was first created using Google Maps, which gives a total distance of 5.5 miles and an estimated time of just under two hours. The route passes by plenty of places of interest as well as alternative options for food and drink.
