A great idea to entertain the kids!
That bit between Christmas and New Year can be a bit awkward. There's the temptation to stay home, relax and eat any leftovers while also toying with going out and enjoying time with the family on a fun adventure.
The journey takes in some spectacular scenery and you can admire the views of the hills and estuaries at the foot of one of England's highest mountains. You will pass through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Lake District National Park and Frontiers of the Roman Empire Hadrians Wall and look out for wildlife en route, including Greylag Geese, Curlew, Shelduck, Red Squirrels and Buzzard.
It is the oldest and longest narrow gauge railway in England and is known as 'La’al Ratty' in olde Cumbrian dialect. All return rides on the vintage trains include a mug of festive fruit punch and a mince pie.
