, popular with everyone from Carmy Berzatto to Kendall Jenner. Now, however, it seems there’s another sandal in town: the Madrid.
Admittedly, the one-strap style’s first high-profile moment was an inauspicious one – Carrie Bradshaw chose an olive-green pair for her hip surgery in season one of– but its appeal transcends hospital rooms, even if it does have medical origins. Launched in 1963, the Madrid was, in fact, Birkenstock’s first footbed sandal. Originally marketed to doctors via ads placed in scientific journals, it quickly became the Croc of its day among healthcare workers.
