The ex-Tory leader MPIainDS said the decision to invite President Xi's deputy to the coronation illustrated the UK’s “project kowtow” foreign policy on China

on Tuesday, James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary, insisted the UK “will act” if China continues to breach the Joint Declaration designed to ensure Hong Kong’s freedoms.

“The British Government’s policy with regards to China begins more and more to look like a ‘project kowtow’ based on our desperate worry about business and finance, and I have to say that’s not the way to conduct foreign policy.It comes as the Government faces an, who have accused Rishi Sunak of being “soft” on Beijing despite tough talk during last summer’s election campaign.

Mr Cleverly was criticised on Tuesday night after insisting Britain must engage with President Xi rather than isolate Beijing in a “new Cold War”, despite increasing concerns over a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan. “Instead, this Government will advance British interests directly with China,” he added, announcing that the UK would look to foster “constructive and stable relations” with the country in a bid to reflect its “global importance”.– a self-ruling island with a democratically elected Government.earlier this month with “waves of simulated strikes” aimed at strategic targets.
