Sasha Marsden's killer will be eligible for parole before his 60th birthday

The Government has rejected a bid to change the law despite a passionate appeal from the family of a murdered Blackpool teenager.

Det Supt Andy Murphy said: "I believe that Minto is a calculated killer. His actions were premeditated and evil. He lured Sasha to her death by promising her work at the hotel. She placed her trust in him thinking that she could earn a few pounds to help support her through college. Instead, she ended up in the hands of her killer."

Sasha's sister Katie Brett had argued the timeline is unrealistic and launched a petition for the four week limit to be removed in cases of murder. Launching her bid, she told LancsLive: "For any family who has just sat through the murder trial of their loved one, the last thing they are going to want to do is start researching sentencing guidelines.

The petition attracted almost 15,000 signatures but has now been rejected by the Government. Refusing the petition, it said it has no plans to remove or amend the limit. It said: "This is because it is important to avoid ongoing uncertainty about the sentence to be served. This limit also reflects similar constraints on defendants appealing against conviction or sentence.
