Environmentalists say bulldozing the village to expand the Garzweiler mine would result in huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions.The government and utility company RWE argue the coal is needed to ensure Germany's energy security.RWE is the energy company that owns the village and operates the mine.
Their treasure is the lignite coal, a low-grade version of the fuel which is especially polluting because more of it has to be burned to produce units of power.
