Growth trajectories among infants with vs without in utero COVID-19 exposure MassGeneralNews harvardmed COVID19 coronavirus covid children infants babies
By Bhavana KunkalikarApr 3 2023Reviewed by Danielle Ellis, B.Sc. In a recent study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers explored longitudinal weight gain in infants who were exposed to in-utero coronavirus disease 2019 .
About the study In the present study, researchers conducted a comparative analysis of the longitudinal growth trajectories of infants who were and were not exposed to COVID-19 in utero. The comparator group consisted of mothers with no recorded prenatal COVID-19 history and tested SARS-CoV-2 negative via RT-PCR during universal screening at the time of delivery. The present study is centered on a specific group of neonates delivered by mothers enrolled in the MGB COVID-19 Perinatal Biorepository.
Results No significant differences were observed in terms of prenatal age, tobacco usage, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and obesity between mothers who had prenatal COVID-19 and those who did not. The cohort under study revealed that mothers who contracted COVID-19 predominantly exhibited mild symptoms and were diagnosed during the third trimester of pregnancy.
There were significant differences in the BMI and weight z-scores trajectories of infants born to mothers with prenatal COVID-19 compared to those without. This difference was observed from birth up to 12 months of age. These dissimilarities were resilient in multivariate models that accounted for the infant and maternal covariates incorporated in the birth analyses.
