Writing for ipaperviews, billionaire ex-Tory donor Guy Hands reveals he and his wife, Julia, are going to divert hundreds of millions of their fortune to climate change projects in an effort to “reverse some of the damage we have done to our planet”
When I was eight years old, I was told that the Earth would eventually burst into flames because of the sun. I burst into uncontrollable tears, despite my teacher reassuring me that this was millions of years away. The concept of time was not comforting to an eight-year-old.
We have visited almost every year since 1988 and we have photos of our children and their grandparents sitting under the Banyan Tree in Front Street, Lahaina where more than 30 years ago my wife’s father used to buy mementoes. The tragic loss of life resonates greatly, and while I know that the Hawaiian people will rebuild and recover, we have to learn from this wake-up call and act to preserve our planet.
Meanwhile, many companies and politicians are claiming to help tackle the climate emergency with minimal changes to their business model or policies. The radical transformation that we need cannot be achieved without significant change, but greenwashing has become so common that many people believe that it will be the small things that make the biggest difference.
