Filled with men who could compete with Arnold Schwarzenegger, I was convinced I could hear sniggers wherever I went
, I was convinced I could hear sniggers in the backdrop before starting to remove the leftover 20kg weights. A giant, I mean, a man, approached me and asked for said weights. My feeble attempt at breaking the ice by making light of the fact that I definitely wouldn’t be needing them was met with sneery laughs and a scornful “yeah, we can see that” and suddenly I felt like a mouse.
Fast-forward a couple of years, and I was doing shift work: two days, followed by two nights. My fitness had reached a new low, due to the nature of the job and indulging in cheeky takeaways. I then learned that a colleague regularly attended the gym only a five-minute drive away, giving me the initiative to try again.
I visited during the day, only to immediately regret that decision – it was busier than Trafalgar Square on New Year’s Eve. So, I headed to the trustee treadmill, did 20 minutes and made a quick exit. One night, I said “screw it” and headed for the weights, only to see two larger lads working out, taking up the small space available. There was no one else there. Considering the pair were amping each other up for their respective partners who were watching close by, it felt extremely awkward having to wade my way past to grab a much lighter set of dumbbells.
A few moments in, they started laughing at me – potentially because of my size, how I struggled to lift the 8kg weights or just my lack of understanding of what I should be doing – so, I scurried like a coward. Membership cancelled. Back to square one. Something to this extent happened on and off for about four years.found that more than nine million people in England will be living with major illnesses come the year 2040 – a rise from one in six to one in five.
