Lewis Hamilton has said there is “no hold up” over a new Mercedes Formula One contract. The seven-time F1 champion is in the final year of his existing deal but says he will “still be here” regardless of his ability to fight for a championship in 2023.
British F1 champions Jenson Button and Damon Hill recently questioned whether Hamilton would continue without being able to fight for a title.
Last year marked the first winless year of Hamilton’s F1 career as Mercedes struggled with its car design.“It’s ultimately people creating rumors without facts,” he said. “It’s never helpful. And you would have thought they would have both known by now. I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13. Having a difficult year we had last year, I’m still here, and whether or not we have a difficult year this year, I’ll still be here. I’m a fighter, and we fight as a team.
“So there is no hold up with our contract. I’ve always been very, very relaxed. I don’t feel like I’ve got to get it done right this second. I’m in a very fortunate position. It’ll get done when we’re ready.”After racing for McLaren, a team that used Mercedes engines, through the early part of his F1 career, Hamilton joined the factory Mercedes team in 2013. He has claimed six of his seven titles and 82 grand prix victories with Mercedes, both records for a driver with a single team.
Mercedes struggled to adjust to last year’s technical regulations, designing a car that lacked the pace to fight Red Bull and Ferrari on a regular basis. At 38, he is the second-oldest driver on the F1 grid, only younger than 41-year-old Fernando Alonso. Although Mercedes has made changes to its car design for this year with the aim of returning to the title fight, the signs from testing suggested Red Bull will remain the team to beat. Hamilton said Thursday that he knew the “challenges that [Mercedes] would be facing” this year from the first time he drove the car.
