Harry and Meghan should be grateful to Jeremy Clarkson – he has proved their point perfectly 🔵 How many pairs of eyes read Clarkson’s words and didn’t see anything wrong with them? ✍️ Simon_Kelner for ipaperviews
You can’t read the column in its entirety any longer because it has been expunged online, but, in it, Clarkson admits to hating Meghan “not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West”, but on a “cellular level” . He wrote that he wanted her paraded naked through the streets of every town in Britain while people shouted “Shame” and pelted her with “lumps of excrement”.
Even though this is written with Clarkson’s trademark hyperbolic flourish, and is clearly not meant to be taken literally, these are pretty outrageous things to say, deeply offensive and, for the most part, indefensible – at any time, on any platform, and in any developed culture. This affair tells us very little about Clarkson: my suspicion is that the column was written after lunch, and he has, after all, made a career out of being opinionated and sardonic.
In his defence, it’s not for him to judge whether he was overstepping the mark. That’s what editors are for. And this is the interesting and revealing aspect of this story, one which plays to Meghan’s agenda. How many pairs of eyes read Clarkson’s words and didn’t see anything wrong with them?is edited by a woman who is proud of the way in which she has made her paper more sensitive to matters of race and gender, and yet she and/or her lieutenants waved the column through.
