Notre Dame might have Hartman for only one season, but on the balance of Saturday night, it’s got a chance to be something special. Hartman’s final stat line undersold his command of Notre Dame’s offense, which scored touchdowns on its first five possessions. Hartman is everything the Irish were not at quarterback last season: reliable, composed and confident. And what he did to Navy on Saturday night suddenly raises the ceiling on what Notre Dame’s season can be.
But on Saturday, Notre Dame bullied Navy in the trenches and finished with 191 rushing yards on 32 attempts , including sacks. It didn’t help that Navy’s offense dropped an open fourth-down pass on its first drive and fumbled the ball three times. Navy’s longest play, under new offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut, went for 14 yards.
Newberry was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach because of his success on that side of the ball, and the team had talked about how much more physical they were in the offseason in order to avoid the slow starts in recent years. But Saturday’s loss looked like early-season Navy from the past few years.
