as news emerged that his Prime Minister was planning on undoing vast swathes of his mini-Budget in the hope of placating the markets. It is an unceremonious end for the country’s first black chancellor, who had swept to power with Ms Truss having forged what appeared to be an unbreakable alliance with his long-time political ally.
The two were ideological bedfellows, believing intently that low taxes inevitably lead to higher growth. They had penned the now infamous booktogether, which called for a lower tax, lower regulation economy early in their parliamentary careers. And such was their alliance, Mr Kwarteng had even bought a house on the same street as Ms Truss in London’s leafy suburb of Greenwich.
