Britain’s defence secretary and his top general said they had a “frank” discussion about a range of challenges facing the army - from a failure to ensure enough women enjoy careers to allegations of bullying and even questions around a murder in Kenya
The head of the army then set out plans for an independent audit of what he described as"army culture to reinforce the best and weed out the worst".
In addition, mid-ranking officers will be subjected to more probing feedback from subordinates to help identify the best leaders. There will also be more focused education, training and pastoral support to everyone in the army's training centres. The reviews come ahead of an announcement later this month by the army about its future structure and deployments.But the lack of women in top ranks is a legacy of a fighting force that has traditionally been dominated by men. Soldiers are promoted up through the ranks, so women need to progress upwards rather than be inserted in at the highest level.
