The creator of the Fast 800 diet also says that oily fish have major health benefits
Coronary heart disease causes more than 66,000 deaths in the UK a year, at an average of 180 people per day, making it one of the leading causes of premature deaths. As a result, there is lots of advice on how to keep your heart healthy and how to avoid falling victim to heart disease.
There are many factors that increase the risk of coronary heart disease like smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and being overweight. Your age, family history and ethnic background can also make you more susceptible. Health expert Dr Michael Mosley has also had his say on how to avoid heart disease. In a recent Q and A on his Instagram page he said: "In short, the Mediterranean style diet is your answer. It's hailed by doctors and scientists worldwide for its menu of healthy fats, protein, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses."There is a big body of scientific evidence to support the belief that a Mediterranean-style diet is great for your cardiovascular health and your waistline.
"Oily fish especially has loads of health benefits, helping to prevent heart disease and protecting your joints. It can also lower levels of depression. I advise eating fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel around three times a week." The British Heart Foundation also have tips on how to avoid heart disease, advising people to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit and veg, reducing your salt intake and also keeping to recommended alcohol guidelines. They also say that having a healthy weight can reduce your risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases like heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia.
