Some cough syrups could be pulled from shelves over fears that they are addictive and can lead to serious health problems. Codeine linctus, a common cough syrup, may only be available on prescription or on the advice of a pharmacist.has reported that the UK's medicine regulator has seen a rising number of complaints linked to cough syrup about addiction and health problems.

There have already been 95 reports this year. The MHRA has launched a consultation to gather views from health professionals and members of the public on making the medicine available only when prescribed by a GP. Professor Claire Anderson, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said:"We also have significant concerns about its misuse and addictive potential, as well as the risk of overdose."
