Harris Dickinson is wonderful as a deadbeat dad in this working-class father-daughter film
after the death of her single mother, scraping by selling stolen bicycles with her mate. She scratches off “stages of grief” from a chart on her wall; she refuses to take off an oversized West Ham football kit her mum gave her.
Georgie’s marginal existence, undiscovered by social services thanks to some crafty voice recordings and her precocious self-assurance, is soon threatened by the arrival of her errant father. Harris Dickinson, a young British actor who has distinguished himself in a brilliant series of film roles including last year’s Palme D’Or winner, is wonderfully understated and baleful as Jason.
This is the first film from British director Charlotte Regan and it balances imagination and low-key humour with its social realism. With its eye on the junk-ridden ephemera of exurban Britain – its scurrying rats, colourfully painted doors, and dilapidated train stations –is vivid to look at and even more vivid to feel: Georgie’s friendships are real and joyful.
Avoiding sentimentality and capturing a uniquely working-class story without patting itself on the back ,
