Hero driver of Salisbury train crash revealed as 74-year-old 'legend'
THE hero driver of the Salisbury train crash is 74-year-old Robin Tandy, it emerged last night.
He was left with life-changing injuries after applying the emergency brake and flinging himself across his cab.His quick thinking when his train collided with another in a tunnel is said to have prevented many casualties and deaths amid heavy rain on Sunday night. Mr Tandy has worked on the railways since he was 15 and has been a driver since the 1970s. He is described as a “legend”.
Friend and colleague Kevin Regan called him “probably the most experienced driver on the network if not the country”."He must have only had about six seconds to react.” It was suggested yesterday the crash which injured 12 passengers was probably caused by leaves on the line.
