Higher childcare costs and fewer nursery places looming as sector faces budget cuts 🔴 Exclusive from RichardVaughan1
About 400 nurseries have closed since August 2020, out of a total of 27,160 according to Ofsted figures. The total number of childcare providers dropped by more than 11 per cent in the two years to June.
The Conservatives’ pledge to offer parents 30 hours of free childcare over the age of two without requisite funding has forced many providers to close, while existing ones are struggling to recruit staff. A survey by the charity Coram Family and Childcare earlier this year showed that childcare costs had gone by £600 since 2021 alone for parents paying for 50 hours a week.
Ofsted figures released this year showed 10,256 childcare providers left the sector in 2021/22, resulting in a net reduction of 4,019. A DfE spokesman said: “We are committed to improving parents’ access to affordable, flexible childcare and are currently exploring a wide range of options to do this. We have already increased funding to local authorities to increase the hourly rates they pay to childcare providers, and we’re providing further support for early years providers with their energy costs.”
