Knowing your Highway Code is a must for any driver. But one issue relating to petrol could lead to a costly mistake, potentially leaving you in line for a £100 fine and penalty points on your licence.
While those watching the pennies - which, let's face it is most of the UK population - may also be keeping an eye on the petrol gauge and how much they can afford to fill up, drivers who let their fuel drop into the red could be in further trouble. According to the AA, these drivers risk not only damaging their vehicle, but a hefty fine and penalty points.
The warning comes after one member of the motoring organisation caused an obstruction on the road after running out of fuel and was hit with a £100 ticket from police. Liverpool Echo reported that the same motoring rules apply for those with electric vehicles, who allow the battery to run flat.Fuel related issues seem to be a problem for drivers across the country. The AA said it attended more than 10,500 breakdowns last year where members had run out of fuel or electrical charge.
While running out of fuel, or charge, itself isn't illegal, motorists can be fined a minimum of £100 and three penalty points if their car obstructs the road as a result of an avoidable breakdown, or if running out of fuel is deemed to result in careless or dangerous driving. If a vehicle causing an obstruction is found to be at fault for a collision, the penalty can be more serious.
Rule 97 of The Highway Code states: "Before setting off. You MUST ensure that you have sufficient fuel for your journey, especially if it includes motorway driving."
