Police found a Stanley knife

on a man when he was arrested on the roof of his ex-partner's property. But magistrates in Nottingham heard there was an explanation for why Jack Newcombe was there - he wasn't allowed in the property and was actually staying in his former partner's room in the building.

Solicitor Emma Eardley, representing 32-year-old Newcombe, now of London Road, Nottingham, said in court on Wednesday : "It was hostel accommodation where his partner was residing at the time. He was homeless and was not allowed in. He was scaling up the wall and was staying her room. "He had everything on him because he was homeless." Newcombe entered a guilty plea to possessing a folding knife in Cranmer Street, St Ann's, on November 30 last year. Unconditional bail was granted to Newcombe as the Probation Service prepare a report before he is sentenced on January 25.
