Flames soared from the roof of the 102-year-old building

A pub landlord began evacuating people from their homes as a once-cherished Manchester swimming baths went up in smoke. Fire crews swarmed Barlow Road after a blaze broke out at the old Levenshulme swimming pools building.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I’d come out to look at something else and there was smoke coming from the building. There were big orange flames coming out over the roof.

Mark's quick-thinking sparked a scramble for locals as they swiftly moved away from the scene. A woman living on Barlow Road said: “The guy who owns the pub knocked on and said we need to evacuate. So I moved my car and took my kids elsewhere." One resident living nearby hit out at how the building had been allowed to become 'run down'. He said there had been issues with ‘kids breaking in, squatters in there, homeless, you name it.’

“I rang the fire brigade. They didn’t know about it at that point but said as we were speaking vehicles were on the way. Then nine appliances turned out. They were worth their weight in gold."
