“Watching the show was a reminder of how rarely we’ve seen graphic depictions of childbirth in films or on television, even when other forms of violence were commonplace, humdrum, even.”
have already been called upon to defend themselves, with viewers at screenings responding strongly to the scene. “Each birth in this show has a theme, just as the battles I’ve filmed in the past have a central concept. The theme of this birth scene was ‘torture’,” co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik. The intention, the showrunners argue, is to shine a light on parallels between this quasi-medieval fantasy world and the world in which we live.
That the history of childbirth is bloody, violent, and often resulted in the deaths of women and their babies is news to no one – in line with history Aemma Targaryen has already suffered as a result of a series of stillbirths, miscarriages, and infant death – but as this hasn’t always been reflected on our screens, especially not within a genre that can marginalise women and their lives, it still feels groundbreaking when it is.
I’ll admit I braced myself before watching it as I didn’t know how I’d react. I was fine, as it turned out, but the aspect I found the hardest to stomach was the lack of consent: it is her husband who decides to sacrifice her to save the baby. His wife has no idea what is happening as she is pinned down and the knife is brandished, nor told that certain death will be the result. She is not given anything to numb the pain, not even alcohol.
In showing this, it felt as though the show was also making something of a feminist statement about the sort of gore that we see on television, which is usually the result of typically masculine violence such as battle scenes. There are more births to come across the season. As showrunner Ryan Condal has, “We think you see plenty of violence of all colours in Westeros, but there is a particular violence to childbirth, even childbirth that goes well in the end. We wanted to dramatise that.
