As well as gaining skills in English, maths and science, Mr Chaudhary said the children at the school, aged between five and 16, also take part in local climate action.
The river provides more than half of Delhi’s water supply, posing a serious health threat to the city’s 20 million residents. Mr Chaudhary said this “fee” gives the children some dignity and prevents stigmatisation from not being able to afford an education at a state-run school.Sharda Yamuna Khadar Pathsala began in 2018 when its founders realised many children living in the Yamuna Khadar community dropped out after eighth class – usually when they are around 12 years old – without knowing how to read or write.
With the help of local organisations, some of the children are enrolled in state board exams and are encouraged to continue their education.
